I am an Electromechanical and Computer Engineer. Between 1999 - 2003, I was part of a team of college students and graduates who designed and built several prototype conversions and raced them in the Tour de Sol:

1984 VW Scirocco -> Pure EV (1999, 2000 Tour de Sol, driver)
Ford Ranger Pickup -> Plug-in, Series Biodiesel Hybrid (2001 TdS)
2002 Volkswagen Golf TDI -> Straight Vegetable Oil (2003 TdS, driver)

As someone who has known firsthand that EVs have been possible and viable for years, I am excited to see the auto industry is finally turning to them. The stopgaps and excuses that have prevented EV's from coming into full production and adoption are finally melting away.
