Hi again guys! As usual, enjoyed the interview with Colin and Carrick. Just for grins, I went to youtube to check out the videos, including the ones from 'igroops' to see the Barbie video- next time you might let Annabelle do the Barbie voice- or check to see if Barbie is a former East German swimmer;) I also saw that you had a couple of other videos there- including Bo and Ryan rapping the Toastmasters toe-tap?! Stick to the EVCAST guys, and don't be caught anytime in the hood. Oh yeh- 4:03pm CST, the curtain is till up at FOSH auto- same at 4:10, 4:16, 4:23, 4:27...okay, you get the picture- perhaps 'CST' is literal- and since we are still in Daylight Savings time, or 'CDT,' the curtain won't go up for another hour because they forgot to set their clocks forward last Spring;-) Will check back at that time!

ARRGH! At the http://www.foshelectricauto.com/ site, you have to click on the 8-18-2008 release notice that became a link, presumably at 4:00. Of course, there is not much there as yet- they are holding off on pictures and videos until a 'major' news channel interviews them next Monday;-) Also, the initial $25,000 price tag jumps to $45-50K after the first 10 cars, and it uses NiMH batteries instead of Li-ion. And here, for me, is the stunner- they are here someplace in Austin! However, they will not disclose their location until after the 'News Channel Release." I will have to see what I can see;-)
Oh- and you can buy one of the EVT-3 cars, only in Austin for now, on Friday, November 28, 2008 (well, at least it is not 'sometime at the end of 2010;-)

The EVcast gets top billing ahead of the tiny little show called The Tonight Show.

Here is a summary thus far- FOSH is either a scam, a hoax (FOSH to some means 'Full of SH**' apparently;-), or they have made a significant breakthru- there is an article at:
that talks about this- that the ability to collect the mid-range infrared has been developed, and can be done cheaply- what it lacks (and it is a BIG lack) is the ability to translate the captured heat waves, which apparently resonate at an extremely high frequency, to electricity- personally, I think this makes it a hoax, given their name- additionally, however, the phone number listed on the web-site registration belongs to some individual at the Austin Fire Marshall's, not to a FOSH participant- that almost makes me think scam rather than hoax! Well, well! We will see next Monday I quess! Unless, of course, Bo can penetrate their technology via interview!
Building a car, any car, is a difficult business. It is very capital intensive and for that reason, only the Big Boys do it. So the idea that a couple of individuals in Austin are going to build a car, any car, other than prototype is unlikely.
So given that it is unlikely that they could build cars at all without the help of the Big Boys, it is doubly unlikely that they could build this WunderCar.
But still we all want to believe.
It is "safe" to be skeptical of all these claims.. after all, nobody wants to look like a moron for falling for a sham. For me, I like to keep the possibility open because someone is always the first. It bugs me when people dismiss possible breakthroughs simply because "it has never been done before". Having said that, there are many signs that point to scams, fraud, shams, cons, whatever you want to call them. When those signs are all around you, it is very difficult to keep "an open mind".
As for FOSH, I will remain open to this possibilty for now and have a much better sense after my initial converstation with them. If they prove convincing, I will certainly do an interview and let our listeners decide for themselves.

Bo - Stop bashing Toyota for progressing in a methodical manner - plug in Prius is one step, a full electric yet another. The company that brought us the Camry is not known for its revolutionary efforts, rather executing very well in an evolutionary manner.
GM on the other hand, should not be lauded for 'making a leap' with the Volt because they ALREADY introduced a full electric more than ten years ago - Google "EV-1" to review how they fumbled that lead.
For really interesting reading, check out the full EV that achieved 375 miles (not a typo) on a single charge - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solectria_Sunrise - in 1996.
The 375 miles is amazing, but perhaps unrealistic. There is a little note at the bottom of the wikipedia article
400 miles (643 km) at 30 mph (48 km/h), 200 miles (321 km)at 60 mph (96 km/h)
So perhaps 200 miles is more realistic. I don't mean to diminish what Mr. Warden has accomplished. However, having some EPA or Idaho National Labs certified numbers is important in these claims. The 375 miles was achieved with a champion solar race car driver at the wheel running no AC or anything else. This is not comparable with Telsa running 220 miles in an EPA certified test on a full-up car rather than a Sunrise with all the sound damping materials removed to reduce weight.
By the way, Toyota jumped into the EV pool at the same time as GM (RAV-4 EV) and in that way seems very similar to GM. Toyota jumped back out of the pool just about as fast as GM. So again, very similar.

Absolutely right John - the Solectria Sunrise' record run of 375 miles was achieved under specific conditions. What I admired most about the record was that it occurred 12 years ago!
And regarding Toyota v GM - you can still by one of those RAV4-EVs...
Plus, Toyota rolled out the Prius in 1997, exporting to U.S. in 2000.
What did GM roll out in 1999? The Escalade.
I wonder if GM and Toyota's behaviors are self consistant.

GM seems to have a "swing for the fences" mentality but that isn't always the case with Toyota. I think the original Prius was a "swing for the fences" approach, but more recent efforts they have taken a different approach.
As for GM's production of large vehicles, this has never really bothered me. Different companies pursue different market segments (even Toyota has started to go after the large truck market). European car makers are fined every year by the EPA for failure to meet CAFE (fuel efficiency standards). This iincludes Mercedes, Volvo, Saab, etc. US and Japanese companies meet the CAFE standards. This really has more to do with business decisions and being a moral or immoral company.
My real regrets are an increasing number of Americans choosing large vehicles. It is hard for me to blame someone in a one-on-one setting. People have different needs for the vehicles and who am I to judge. However, as a whole nation, I really hate the trend to larger vehicles that has taken place over the last 15 years. But generally, I blame the consumer rather than the manufacturer.
