Show 280 is just there, on the left hand column. For some reason, when I add posts they don't always show up. We'll have to ask Bo and Ryan to help with that one...

Great show, but I have one small issue with the commentary.

The idea that there is "wasted" electricity at night is incorrect at best and misleading at worst.  The grid must remain balanced at all times.  So the amount of energy produced equals the amount of energy used.  There is no electricity being produced that is being wasted or discarded or whatever.  The power producers reduce production to match demand.  No matter what it takes, this must happen.

It is true that what we have mostly running at night is coal-fired power plants.  Part of the reason for that is that it is difficult to scale-back coal-fired plants.  The other reason is that they are generally cheaper to run than natural gas powered plants.  So at night, most gas-powered plants are off-line and most coal powered plants are on-line.  However, they may not be able to run the coal-fired plants at full capacity, so they must scale-back on the coal plant.  This makes the coal-fired plant less efficient and more polluting (per KWH anyway).  So you could say that added EVs to the grid at night puts a higher load on the coal fired plants and makes them run more efficiently.  But no-one is "wasting" electricity at night.

As was pointed out in the discussion, what we mostly have at night is excess capacity.  We have the ability to charge cars at night due to less electricity usage for other things like TV sets.  This is not the same thing has having wasted electricity.

This point reminds me of something you often hear on the radio "There were more sellers than buyers on Wall Street today."  Not True.  The number of buyers and seller is exactly the same.  Each share that is sold by someone is bought by someone else.  It must be so.  There is no place to store excess shares or produce more shares as needed.  The system must match.

Same is true with electricity.  Each KWH produced is consumed immediately.  There is no storage or waste in that system.

John C. Briggs
