This week we have on our show the incomparable EV enthusiast Doug Korthof. Some of you may know Doug from the movie Who Killed the Electric Car? where he makes several appearances. Doug was part of that special small group that has turned a nation on to EVs by working so hard to advocate for them. I hope to explore the early days of the groups formation and how it evolved from a group of EV enthusiasts to the David that slue Goliath. We will also explore Doug Korthof's famous or infamous point of view about what is what with EVs.

good interview...

correction ... Stan O. did NOT invent the NiMH battery ... I hear this all the time ... it has never been true ... Stan O. and cohorts invented and developed a rather significant type of improvement to the NiMH battery ... Those Patents related to that work were the ones that were controlled by non-EV friendly companies ... there were NiMH batteries before Stan O.'s work ... NiMH battery invention and development goes back to the 1960's ... even after Stan and companies work there have been others who have invented and developed other alternatives for NiMH production that have nothing to do with the Stan O and cohorts patents and developments.

Additional progress in the improvements of NiMH has continued ... there are modern types NiMH batteries for sale with over 100 wh / kg ... And those are not using the best technology available ... There are Modern types of NiMH batteries for sale with some of the lowest Self Discharge rates of any battery ... there are Modern NiMH batteries for sale with over 15C discharge rates ... there are modern NiMH batteries for sale with over 7C charge rates ... NiMH still has one of the longest proven service lives of any battery type.

NiMH is not perfect and it is really more about picking the right battery that has the right properties for a particular application's needs and priorities ... sometimes that is still a PbA, sometimes it is Li-Ion, sometimes LiFePO4, etc...etc...

Stan and company deserve credit for the excellent work they did ... I am all for that ... but they do not deserve to take the creadit of the work of other people who came before them... and they do not deserve to take or lessen the credit for the work of others that have also done great work after them.

the nissan altra wikipedia entry says 120-mile range. doug's info contradicts this. perhaps this should be edited. down with mis-information.
