My Pursuit of the Ultimate EV (Bo)
Blog Entry

I am a Proud EV Owner!

Sunday, July 27th @ 7:11 AMpost viewed 956 times

I am now the proud owner of Vectrix Scooter as well as a position on the Tesla waiting list.  My scooter will be delivered on Tuesday of this week -- about 2 weeks earlier than promised.  My wait for this was only about 5 days.  As for the Tesla, I did put down the large deposit and I am assured my place in line -- about number 900.  This means, my car is scheduled for delivery in July of 2009.  I should have a few good months of driving here in New England before I have to put it away for the winter.

I still need a replacement for our SUV and my "all season" car.  Winters can get quite nasty here in New England.  Due to our family's frequent trips into the mountains (200+ miles away) and my occasional long distance road trips (100+ miles) I am sure our SUV would need at least a plug-in hybrid.  I might be able to get away with a 100% pure EV for my car that is a) good in the snow and cold weather and b) gets at least 100 mile range.

As of now, I still have my eyes on the Fisker and perhaps the Volt, but I feel that the Volt will be very difficult to get due to its popularity.  I feel that for our SUV needs we may have to go standard hybrid for now, as no reasonable soultion seems to be on the horizon.

Bo,

Maybe its time for you to have a segment on the EVcast about the dearth of hybrid mini-vans.  Yes, I know you mentioned on your show that you guys need 4-wheel drive.  But note that the current Sienna has had an all-wheel drive option here in the States for a while.  The Estima Hybrid that Toyota sells in Japan has some snazzy 4-wheel drive system that is part of the Hybrid Synergy Drive.

So, I say Toyota was caught focusing too much on their SUVs for our market considering they have not offered a hybrid van here yet.  They could have done this several years ago and I know tons of folks who want to buy a hybrid mini-van.  In a way, this is like GM and Ford.  They are all missing the market opportunity.

Also, it seems to me Toyota put too much emphasis on the upper end cars for expanding the HSD beyond the Prius.  I bet Toyota now realize now that they wasted development on HSD for the fancy Lexus models, and that the HSD premium was too expensive in those cases.

Maybe you and Ryan can flesh out how much of this is conspiracy, and how much is mis-marketing.

Whipping Out the Wallet...

Saturday, July 19th @ 10:09 AMpost viewed 243 times

Back from my west coast trip.  My tour of Tesla and my test ride (they would not let me drive - insurance issues) made it clear to me that I will be getting the Tesla -- but delivery will still be about a year away.

As for the TRIAC, unfortunately, my home state, MA, will not allow this on public roads because it is a three-wheeled covered vehicle.

Early next week I will head down to Rhode Island where the home of the Vectrix is -- the fully electric motorcycle/scooter.  I think this will be a OK interum solution for now.

As for my full-time car, I am leaning to the Fisker Karma.  I will start that process next week.  Still looking that 2010 delivery, but I like that solution better than the Volt, and I think my chances of getting a Fisker sooner would be better than getting a Volt.

would you have purchased the Triac if it were allowed in your state?

The TRIAC was my #1 choice.

Getting Ready To Whip Out the Wallet

Thursday, July 3rd @ 6:53 AMpost viewed 249 times

I am headed down to the Silicon Valley area in a couple of weeks to hopefully settle on an EV.  I have several appointments setup for interviews, but also test driving a couple of cars.

First, I am meeting with Mr. Ehab Youssef from Green Vehicles about the TRIAC.  If all goes as well as I think it will, I plan on making that my first EV.

Next, I have an appointment to test drive the Tesla.  I am also pretty sure I will be putting down my deposit to secure my place in line.

The TRIAC I should be driving within a month or so.  The Tesla -- if I am lucky by the end of next summer.  I will be roughly number 800 on the waiting list.

Oh yea... I also plan on getting the VOLT when it comes out.  Now I just need to build myself a much bigger garage.
