Electric Vehicle Owners double charged by City of Santa Monica.
-
Well, it turns out Santa Monica isn't that friendly to EV owners after all. After paying $8 to park in the main lot to meet with the Santa Monica NEV group on Sat. Sept. 27, I was told there were no 110 outlets for the public in that lot and that I would have to park in an adjacent parking structure. Since I had driven from Norwalk, CA and had to charge there in order to make the return trip, I parked in the structure and plugged in. But when I tried to leave, the parking attendent demanded that I pay $8 again, even through I showed her my previous payment of $8 and that I was an electric vehicle owner who was only there to charge.
-
It just shows that a lot more things need to be done in terms of city planning and accommodations so that EV owners are not charged double the parking rate that polluting gas vehicles are charged.

A summary of the podcast today:

Terry Yager of Vantage Vehicle Inc.  An A/C 72 volt LSV (25mph) utility vehicle for campus, base, park and city type of environments.  The company is based in Corona, CA.  Cost is around $19,000.  Uses Deca lead-acid batteries and goes about 50 miles at 25mph.  Web site at:  http://www.vantagevehicle.com/

Kevin McCray asks what is needed to bring EV's to the road more quickly -  Bo's answer- need the 35mph classification.  Ryan's answer- Manufacturers need to ramp up production.  Kevin's answer- Public Policy to bring more R&D money for development.  No, no, no!  It's the battery!  It's always been the battery!  Bring a better, cheaper battery to market, and EV production and sales will soar!

Linda Nicholes, President of Plug-in America, the EVangelists of EV's. Linda is 'expecting' her Tesla in two weeks, after a two-year gestation period!  Ouch!  Also has a 2001 RAV-4 with 70,000 mile on it- very cool!  Good luck in a future battery replacement.  For the future?  To push these car companies to move from 'concept' to full production, and to encourage consumers not to buy anything but a plug-in with electric drive. Then party Saturday night at Chris Payne's house- woo-hoo! Web site is:  http://pluginamerica.org/

Ron Freuin, from the Electric Auto Association, which, of course, advocates EV use through education.  Main communication is via their News Letter.  There are over 50 chapters- meetings range from twice a year to monthly, depending on the size of the chapter.  Meetings foster discussion on matters EV, on EV conversions or purchases.  Web site is:  http://www.electricauto.org/

Bo and Ryan will upload on Sunday the audio on the All-Technology debate with discussion and debate on the various alternative energy vehicles.

Paul,
   Cool summary.

I would like to second the proposal that the problem was, and is, the battery.   I don't think we would be having the LSV/MSV discussion if we had acceptable batteries.  As for Ryan's crank up production, well don't do it unless they will sell.  And as for Public Policy as the driver, well if we had acceptable batteries, Public Policy would not be needed.  People would just purchase EVs as the sensible choice just like they purchase the Prius.
