I don't consider myself a true "hypermiler", but I do tend to achieve higher mileage than the EPA estimates. For example, I had to make two round trips from upstate NY to NC in the last month, a total of 2692 miles. My average mileage for the two trips was 58.1 MPG in my 2008 Prius. My only "tricks" are:
I tend leave my windows up and use my climate control to stay comfortable. I do NOT tailgate trucks or cars, but I do notice that my mileage goes up when I am in traffic. I guess the passing trucks and cars (exceeding the speed limit) tend to pull my car along a bit.
Anyway, as a nation, we could probably save quite a bit of gas by making a few small changes in driving habits. The same habit changes would of course help range in an EV.
