With the economy in the crapper, investment money non-existent, the auto industry on the brink of collapse, and gas prices around a buck and a half in the US, the question begs to be asked... is the electric car doomed?

In my opinion, the EV has been doomed since the excitement about NIMH and then Lithium-Ion and other advanced battery technologies. The only way to make it affordable is using innexpensive lead acid cells, that is why we are limited to slow golf-carts, Zebras, Zenns, etc. I have a formula to make them hit the highways and have about 100mi. range, however nobody belives me.

The one thing that can un-doom the EV is for each one of us to start spending our auto dollars on them. I started in this industry in 1991 and what happened is I ran into all these old timers, mostly with EAA, who were driving electric cars and they would whip out their wallets and show you photos of all the electric cars they have built and driven during their lifetimes. These were my heroes and inspiration knowing that they spent their whole lives working on this and that a new generation needed to take up this issue that remains unfinished. This is one of the things that keeps me driving and advocating electric despite all the ups and downs.

I think the same as Ryan sometimes; while I'm often an early adopter of new technology (when income permits), I still marvel at the technology and don't take it for granted. I often remember what it was like before 4WDs (SUVs you guys call em) and mobile phones. We adapt fast as a species. That's a good thing when you consider the EV movement.

Good show guys and gal - Shannon brought some good insights, gleaned from her doctoral research I'm sure- I disagree about the batteries however- it is the 400 pound gorilla in the room of EV success.  But I hope she is available for future shows with y'all;-)

Well- the concensus seemed to be that EV's are not Doomed, but Delayed, leaving the big question of how long of a delay.  2009 promises to be an interesting year!
