Ahhh! Show was short but sweet! Interesting news on Phoenix Cars and Maui- I hope they are successful. Maui is 727.2 square miles, about 50% bigger than the city of Houston, or a little over twice the size of New York City- so building an EV infrastructure there should not be to hard. This is actually good news, as this type of environment could be a very good test bed for bringing together EV's and the infrastructure to support them. In fact, they talked about this in the press conference. Phoenix signed a MOU with Maui to for this, and plan to provide 20-30 vehicles during the 1st quarter of 2009 for a 6 month test. They also plan to sell 2500 cars total next year in California and Hawaii, and hope to ramp up to 10,000 a year in 2010. Hopefully this is not wishful thinkingl-) You can see the video of their announcement at: http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com/news-and-events/index.php
The ultrcapacitor in the LED flashlight is not huge news- Last year I think it was Black and Decker that came out with a line of Ultracapacitor tools, and I think other tool makers are also coming out with them- these do not have the capacity of the Li-Ion tools, but the big selling point is the very fast recharge time, so workers will have more power available over the course of a workday. However, I do not see this as a good idea for flashlights- usually you need them when the power has gone out- having batteries for this makes better sense- but I do recommend the LED flashlights- the batteries last a whole lot longer in them- we have replaced all of our flashlights with LED flashlights over the last couple of years or so because of this.
