Hi guys,

I like and agree with most of your predictions, except (I am kind of suspicious on that one) the 20% price reduction on lithium batteries in large formats. I always have been opposed to that technology on EVs., not only on the price issue, but also on safety and other drawbacks preventing the widespread use of that technology.

I still think, as it was proven with the EV-1, Rav-4, EV-Ranger, and other projects, that you can travel about 80 or so miles at 80 or so miles per hour, running on good ol' lead acid cells. It would make your car heavier...but you don't have to carry it on your own back, anyway.

In my modest opinion all automakers know that, however they have to buy time on their century old business, which will be permanently eliminated by the appearance of a win win EV. hitting the road with a decent price tag on (batteries included). I already have a name for that creature: It will call "Pac-Man" (TM), and will eat up all competitors (BYD included) within a year. This is my prediction for 2010.

There was an interesting, short interview by Dr Dennis on his site, about the battery temperature control for the Volt's battery pack:  http://gm-volt.com/2009/01/05/chevy-volt-battery-temperature-control/

He actually has several interviews like this over the last few months, each showing the details, thought and engineering that is going into the Volt, especially the battery pack.  This is showing, I think, that GM did learn a lot from the EV1 program and is implementing that knowledge into the Volt's development.  This is a car that is being designed to work well in the 100 degree summers of Texas, and the 0 degree winters of the midwest, while maintaining the battery so it will last for 10 years- no mean feat given the current battery technology!  I am more and more being sold on the viability of the Volt, and hope I can afford one when it comes out.  I would still like a pure EV as well, but until a fast charge infrastructure is built, the Volt will fill the bill just nicely!

I know this show was only for predictions for 2009, but if GM can survive this year, I think the Volt is going to be a huge home run for GM, from 2010 on, and push the other major car companies to raise the bar on EV production.

My prediction for 2009 is that the EVcast will change to a one a week format in June 2009 when Bo receives his Telsa and enjoys driving it around so much that he can't bear to sit in his office and work.

Hi Bo & Ryan,

I just want to say that I enjoy listening to evcast everyday and in fact I missed it a lot during the Christmas break so I just listened to the "evcast interviews". keep it up!
Batteries: let's be reminded that cars in the 1900's started out as electric(using lead acid battery) and not ICE. when the ICE was adopted, the electric cars ended and the battery technology innovations died with it. Now we're building electric cars again but were still using the 100 year old lead acid battery technology. There isnt much change until the portable devices came out, especially the laptops, and then there is much development in the rechargeable lithium ion. Expensive or not, we have to push for the electric vehicles so that the battery technology will not be "left behind" again. Saying all that, however, does not mean I believe all the news about "new battery technology" especially from EESTOR. I think they really don't have even a "working" prototype that is why they keep on delaying.

My 2009 prediction: everybody will cry because EESTOR will admit that their battery technology came from the ENERGIZER bunny.

LOL!  Very funny John!  My addendum to your prediction- Bo and Ryan will go back to a daily podcast in September, 2009...when Bo's wife also finds out how fun the Tesla is to drive;-)

Lithium not only have 5x capacity than lead acid they offer 10x more cycles. The same reason you dont use lead acid in your cell phone will be the reason to adopt the lithium iron phospate cells in your car. Furthermore your battery is non-toxic. win-win-win

Happy New Year Casters:

The most accurate prediction is Ryan's last one.  I can't wait to see Discovery's Green Planet Channel EVcast based program.  Guys it is not really a prediction when you have a signed contract.  That is not fair.

Best of luck developing the new program!!  It is going to be a great 2009 Here are some possible Titles for the Show:

  1. Traveling with a Joltzzzz~~~
  2. Charger Nation
  3. EV Scam Busters
  4. EVcast Range Extended
  5. "#+@%!" My Batteries Died
  6. TechnoShenanigans w/ Bo and Ryan
