As usual, good show- a most excellent presentation of the EV 'basics' by John Honniball.  I hope the rest of the EVcast visitors get to enjoy the video of this show and not just the audio stream. I look forward to Part Two - Revenge of the Batteries, maybe?

For anyone who's interested you might want to check out the modulation technology behind 3 phase AC motors that make them so efficient. Its called Space Vector Modulation and Wikipedia has an entry on it here:

Camosun College in Vancover, BC. Canada has a project to build an AC inverter to power a wide range of induction motors. I've been contemplating a project like this for some while. You can find some details here.

I had one more question on power in the UK. You mentioned that household power in some countries, presumably in the UK, are more powerful than over here in the US. Our 120 volt outlets are typically rated up to 20 amps. Are your 240 volt outlets rated for 10 amps or 20 amps like ours?

I'm assuming they are rated for 20 amps. I remember Nikki mentioning about drawing 16 amps @ 220v to charge her vehicle.

Hi Rick, sorry be replying so late (playing EVcast catch-up) but I believe that in the UK power plugs are rated at 250V and 13 amps. Here it's 240V and 10 amps. That UK wattage availability makes owning an EV in the UK a little more "plug & play" than many other countries (comedy drum roll).

Great cast - would love to see the video you mentioned doing.

I love hearing about the DIY side of the game.  Until we have a bunch of commercially avaiable cars, the action seems to be in DIY.
