I am a Proud EV Owner!

Sunday, July 27th 2008 @ 7:11 AM    post viewed 6161 times

I am now the proud owner of Vectrix Scooter as well as a position on the Tesla waiting list.  My scooter will be delivered on Tuesday of this week -- about 2 weeks earlier than promised.  My wait for this was only about 5 days.  As for the Tesla, I did put down the large deposit and I am assured my place in line -- about number 900.  This means, my car is scheduled for delivery in July of 2009.  I should have a few good months of driving here in New England before I have to put it away for the winter.

I still need a replacement for our SUV and my "all season" car.  Winters can get quite nasty here in New England.  Due to our family's frequent trips into the mountains (200+ miles away) and my occasional long distance road trips (100+ miles) I am sure our SUV would need at least a plug-in hybrid.  I might be able to get away with a 100% pure EV for my car that is a) good in the snow and cold weather and b) gets at least 100 mile range.

As of now, I still have my eyes on the Fisker and perhaps the Volt, but I feel that the Volt will be very difficult to get due to its popularity.  I feel that for our SUV needs we may have to go standard hybrid for now, as no reasonable soultion seems to be on the horizon.

Bo,

Maybe its time for you to have a segment on the EVcast about the dearth of hybrid mini-vans.  Yes, I know you mentioned on your show that you guys need 4-wheel drive.  But note that the current Sienna has had an all-wheel drive option here in the States for a while.  The Estima Hybrid that Toyota sells in Japan has some snazzy 4-wheel drive system that is part of the Hybrid Synergy Drive.

So, I say Toyota was caught focusing too much on their SUVs for our market considering they have not offered a hybrid van here yet.  They could have done this several years ago and I know tons of folks who want to buy a hybrid mini-van.  In a way, this is like GM and Ford.  They are all missing the market opportunity.

Also, it seems to me Toyota put too much emphasis on the upper end cars for expanding the HSD beyond the Prius.  I bet Toyota now realize now that they wasted development on HSD for the fancy Lexus models, and that the HSD premium was too expensive in those cases.

Maybe you and Ryan can flesh out how much of this is conspiracy, and how much is mis-marketing.
