What if you took an Air Car and powered it with compressed hydrogen? You could then use the exhaust to power a fuel cell. This in theory could give you double the range. If you have any ideas on this, post them. Maybe it could work, maybe not. I know it would be a long way off but it's just an idea.

Steve, great observation. Look at the air car. It runs off of a 2500 PSI tank and can go about 100+ miles as the website claims. In compression the energy you put in to compressing the gas is less but roughly equal to the energy you get out. The law of conservation of energy. To get a fuel cell car to go the range that car companies claim is acceptable for a saleable vehicle with room for 4 or 5 people to sit you need to compress the hydrogen to 10,000 psi. The big technological breakthrough is that we have been able to develope tanks that can do that now. However, to compress that much hydrogen into a tank of a hydrogen car that can go 300 miles we are putting in to that tank the equivalent energy of 500 miles of an air car. Put in 500 miles of energy to get 300 miles of fuel cell use? Doesn't make sense. But thinking of it your way. Lets compress that hydrogen to just 2500 psi and send that hydrogen through the air car motor getting our 125 miles range then send the hydrogen through the fuel cell and get another 75 miles out of it for a total range of 200 miles. You would need two motors an electric motor and the air car motor. The fuel cell would have to make electricity at the same time that the air motor is working to not have to recompress the hydrogen to send it thought he fuel cell again. It might work It would be expense, but by Joe I think you have something there.

Hey Joe,
Finally someone with some vision. Its hard to get a response to this type of post on an EV forum, but this is the only forum I check up on. Thanks for putting some thought into your response, it was a good one. |
