Q. What is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)?

A. A hybrid (see def for hybrid) that you plug-in to an electrical outlet.  Why?  Plug-in hybrids can be driven without ever needing to use the gas engine, if charged enough and if the distance is short enough.  Plug in hybrids have the benefits of a pure electric vehicle along with the security of a gas powered engine.

Currently (as of May 26, 2008) there are no plug-in hybrids on the market in the US, but major automobile manufacturers have committed to getting them on the market in late 2009/2010.
