Q. What is a range extended electric vehicle (REEV)?

A. The REEV is similar to a plain plug-in hybrid, except the gas engine does not power the car, it is used as a generator that recharges the batteries.  The car is always powered by the electric motor.  With a REEV, like all plug-in hybrids, you do not NEED the gas part of the engine (ICE) unless you drive beyond the range of your battery capacity / charge.  The upcoming Chevy VOLT is an REEV.
